Bear captured in city; they will keep coming for people’s garbage

SIERRA VISTA — A young male black bear was captured Sunday night on the playground of the Huachuca Mountain Elementary School.
The wild animal was sedated with a Zylazine dart after it climbed a tree, having been corralled by city police officers. It was the same bear that was seen by animal control officers two mornings ago in the same area. It is believed to have come from Fort Huachuca, and there is a another one.
“He’s basically a garbage bear,” said Brad Fulk, a wildlife manager for the Arizona Game & Fish Department. “He’s afraid of people. That’s a credit to him.”
In September, authorities and residents shot and killed four bears in the Huachuca Mountains when the animals got too close for comfort. On Sept. 14, authorities captured a yearling male black bear on the city’s west side and moved it to the Chiricahua Wilderness.
“Our problem is continuing to get worse and worse,” said Fulk, who was uncertain Sunday night where the bear would be released. It takes up to 10 hours for him to process a bear.
On Sunday morning, Fulk counted 50 garbage cans in 30 minutes between Ramsey Canyon and Mandan roads on the south side.
“Tomorrow afternoon we’re going to have another bear in that neighborhood,” he said. “The reason for that is there’s food available.”
